Velodrome speedster JL Rathbone will cap off a breakthrough first half of 2008 with a defining moment in his life next month.
The Winmalee cyclist has been juggling training, competition, study and his recent 21st birthday.
Did we mention he's getting married in July?
You can understand why the Winmalee resident describes himself as being spread a little thin at the moment.
Rathbone can be forgiven for what he considered a slightly below par performance in Melbourne recently after six months packed with success – on and off the track.
Stunning results throughout the year more than make up for the drop off in form at the Revolution series at Vodafone Arena.
A victory in the Austral race in March ranks as one of the biggest of his career.
It was the 110th running of the prestigious event – recognised as the oldest continually held track race in the world.
When you add this performance to his three silver medals from the Australian Championships earlier in the year, it has been an impressive run of results.
Maintaining his modesty despite the recent successes, Rathbone even manages to play down the u/23 NSW Cyclist of the Year award he received for his performances last season.
"You race to win races. You race for your sponsors and your coaches," he said. "Little awards like that are a bit of a bonus. They're not really a symbol of your achievement."
This racer is not your stereotypical sportsman who trains and competes with little in between.
Studying music and with an interest in psychology and architecture, it's amazing he's found time to prepare for a wedding.
"Cycling, it's a career but it's also my hobby at the moment," he said. "So it's about fitting things in where I can."
Rathbone is looking to concentrate on the endurance events, eyeing off a tilt at the next Commonwealth Games while also keeping open the option of a switch to the road races in the future.
Let's hope he can find time to fit it all in.
