If there were medals awarded in the Olympic Games for gift giving, Leura Fine Woodwork Gallery would be going for gold.
The small shop in The Mall supplied Australia's official gifts for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, the Head of Beijing Olympic Committee, the mayor of the Olympic Village and 204 national Olympic committees.
Proprietors Neil Williams and Judith Langley told the Gazette they've done work for the IOC before as well as for large corporations, the Sydney Opera House, Academy Award winners and some Heads of State, but never anything on this scale.
“It's a very satisfying job to get,” Mr Williams said.
“We don't normally reveal these things as we are known by our clients for being discreet, but for a little shop in Leura that directly employs two staff, it's not a bad trick.
“We've been here for 13 years — in terms of high profile, this is as good as it gets.”
The three major individual gifts comprised of a jarrah hollow vessel, a grass tree hollow vessel (both produced by Jack Devos) and a redgum turn bowl (designed by James Hughes).
The gifts for the national Olympic committees were platters made of flame she-oak (designed by Anthony Docherty) with jarrah chopsticks (made by Jim Reid).
“The idea was to combine Australian timber with a Chinese flavour,” Mr Williams said.
“The Australian Olympic Committee gave us a strict time limit and I think they were delighted with the results.
“The makers of the gifts are really talented Australian craftsmen and we used a local supplier for the packaging.
“They made a few extra items for us — it's the sort of thing we want to keep."
Leura Fine Woodwork Gallery products are all Australian made and ordered from up to 100 different woodwork artists from around the country.
“I think that's part of the the reason we were chosen for this,” Mr Williams said.
As for the Games itself, Mr Williams can't get enough of the action.
“I love sports and we're certainly watching the Olympics.
“It's nice because we are getting daily emails from the Australian Olympic Committee with news about what's happening in the Olympic Village.”
Leura Fine Woodwork Gallery is located at 130 The Mall, Leura.
